Top 5 Things I Wish My New Mom Self Knew Then

If I were to write a letter now to myself when I was still pregnant with my firstborn, these are the following things I wish I knew before I became a mother. If I knew these priceless gems of wisdom and practical experience from these fellow mom entrepreneurs and professionals, I would have saved myself a lot of stress, time, and money.

#1. "Meet Your Baby, Then Invest.
"Wait to buy any breastfeeding 'essentials' until you have met your baby. You may find that he or she is all you need. However, it is a good idea to know where you can find items locally when you need them. Specifically, find local resources for breast pumps (including rentals), pump accessories, bottles, nipple cream, special pillows and formula. Even if you are planning to breastfeed, it is a good idea to give some thought to what sort of alternative milk you would consider offering your child."

#2. New Moms Groups are a Crucial Life Line and Provide Invaluable Support.
"In our weekly gatherings, we exchanged birth stories, the challenges we faced, as well as valuable resources. The moms in the group understood exactly what I was going through and we were each other’s support system. We went on walks together. We discussed various topics such as sleep training, using cloth diapers, and partner relationship adjustment."

#3. We can Raise Multilingual Children from Birth--We Can Even Make Our Own Books!
"Reading in the home languages is even more important. When we read to Jacob and Rachel as babies, we read to them only in Russian and Hebrew. We let our friends and family know that books in the home languages would always be the ideal gifts, and we made good use of the books kept from my own childhood....Every year while the kids were small, I made a personalized birthday book for them in Russian, incorporating their names, favorite interests, and photographs of favorite toys and events. This was a fun way for me to celebrate their birthday every year, a unique keepsake for the children, and a way to show them how special Russian books could be."

#4. The Fourth Trimester or First Three Months Postpartum is a Crucial Time for Self Care.
"While the emphasis of the fourth trimester is often placed on baby’s needs, it is also a time when parents learn to become parents. In a short amount of time they learn to share their attention and love with another human being and find new ways to balance the demands of parenthood. It is a time of intense emotional and physical adjustment for mothers. Not only does the mother need to recover from childbirth, but she must also meet the demands of breastfeeding, integrate her birth experience, build strength to meet the physical demand of motherhood, and adjust to her changing relationship to the world. Fathers and partners also must make adjustments to care for the needs of the mother and newborn and negotiate the growing needs of their family."
